Hobby Boss 1/48 SU-22 Update

Hobby Boss 1/48 SU-22 Update

Hi Everyone, Nemo here!  Thanks for stopping by and checking out what’s on my bench.  The Hobby Boss 1/48 Su-17 is moving along again.  This has been a tough build for me mentally.  Not due to the kit, which is actually very nice, but due to my own disappointment in not extending the wings and over-thinking the markings.  It’s a great kit with fantastic fit.  I just need to push through and finish her up.

The main camo is complete.  I used a custom mix of Gunze Aqueous Acrylic paint which sprayed beautifully through the airbrush.  Several sessions of pre and post fading/shading resulted in the finish you see in the pics.  I really enjoyed painting this model and couldn’t be happier with the result.  The panel line wash was Tamiya Dark Brown Panel Line Accent Color and it was so easy to work with.  The wash yields such nice crisp and even panel lines.  Love that stuff!

Next up will be the markings.  Furball Geoff has been kind enough to create insignia masks for me and will take some time to apply.  There are 6 total Afghan Air Force National Insignia markings on the model.  Each insignia will require 5 separate masks.  You do the math, but that is a lot of tedious masking.  You can see the Afghan National Insignia in the pics below.  Very similar process to painting a British Roundel.  Just have to take my time and not rush.  You can also see the overall scheme I’m going for in the pics below.  Hopefully the effort of masking each insignia and nose number will be worth it.

Thanks again for checking out what’s on my bench and for all your tremendous support of the podcast!  May Santa bring you many, many, many kits.  Happy Holidays to you all!

    Howdy Nemo,
I feel like you are a wizard with paint. There’s just this touch that you seem to possess that truly makes the various paint schemes on your builds look so “to scale” that many modelers either over do it or not enough of. This SU-22 looks stunning so far!
Love everything about the podcast. Thanks to all of you for taking the time out of your lives to enrich others in such a great hobby!

Hi Jon, Thanks for the email and I’m stoked you love the SU-22! Painting complex camo is probably my favorite aspect of modeling. The key is patience and thin paint. I didn’t get really good at the airbrush until I understood how important paint ratios, consistency, and patience are. So happy you enjoy the podcast. We really strive to put out a good product and work hard to improve with every episode.

Thanks again for the being a valuable listener and happy modeling!

      Take Care, Nemo
